Dispensaries in Sanford & Pittsboro, NC: Lee & Chatham County (2026 Guide)

Lee and Chatham counties sit on the southwest edge of the Triangle, hold 151,610 residents between them, and have exactly two dedicated hemp storefronts: one in Sanford and one in Pittsboro.

That is one shop per 75,805 people. Wake County, an hour up US-1, has one per 20,258.

Chatham County Has One Hemp Shop for 82,975 Residents

We divide each county's population by the number of dedicated hemp storefronts this directory tracks in it. That ratio is the single most useful number for anyone deciding whether a trip is worth taking, because it tells you whether you will have a choice when you arrive.

Chatham County comes in at 82,975 residents per shop. Lee County comes in at 68,635. Both are worse than Johnston County, which held the record when we mapped it three weeks ago.

A Chatham County resident has roughly one quarter of the retail choice per person that a Wake County resident has. That gap is not about county size. At 82,975 residents Chatham is the 34th largest of North Carolina's 100 counties, ahead of Caldwell, Wilson, and Franklin, and Lee at 68,635 sits 41st.

The gap is about where hemp retail chose to open. Storefront hemp only became a real retail category in North Carolina after the 2018 Farm Bill, and the shops that opened first went to the densest customer bases they could find. Wake got 61. Durham got 12. The counties on the southwest edge of the Triangle, where the drive to a Cary or Apex shop is 30 to 40 minutes rather than three hours, got one each.

Our finding: Lee County lost half its hemp retail this year without any of it being reported. Your CBD Store on South Horner Boulevard in Sanford is now marked permanently closed on its Google business listing, verified September 21, 2026, leaving Hempie's as the county's only dedicated hemp shop for 68,635 residents. We have removed the closed listing from this directory.

Sanford: One Shop on NC 87, Plus a Farm

Sanford is the Lee County seat and the larger of the two towns in this guide, with 32,813 residents as of the state's certified July 1, 2024 municipal estimate. It sits at the crossing of US-1 and US-421, which is why it draws shoppers from Moore, Harnett, and Chatham counties as well as its own.

Hempie's at 3274 NC 87 S is the county's dedicated hemp dispensary. It holds a 4.7 Google rating on 39 reviews and runs 10am to 10pm seven days a week, which is 84 hours and the widest schedule in either county by a large margin. Part of the Hempies group that also runs stores in Raleigh, Selma, and elsewhere in the Triangle, it carries THCa flower and pre-rolls, edibles, vapes, Delta-8, and Delta-9 products, plus tinctures and concentrates.

The NC 87 South address matters more than it looks. That is the southern arterial out of Sanford toward Fort Bragg and Fayetteville, not the downtown retail core, so it is a drive-to rather than a walk-past shop. The upside of that position is the parking and the late close: at 10pm seven nights a week it is open later than anything else within 30 miles.

The second Lee-area name worth knowing is Rocky River Hemp at 630 Taylors Chapel Rd, and it is not a storefront in the usual sense. It presents itself as a farm selling its own CBD and hemp products direct: full-spectrum oils, gummies and drinks, topical salves, and pet products, shipped nationally with a handful of state exclusions. Its Google listing carries a 5.0 rating on 112 reviews, more than any other hemp business in either county, and lists in-store pickup with narrow hours that run a few afternoons a week rather than a standard retail schedule.

There is a wrinkle worth flagging, because it explains part of the coverage gap. Rocky River Hemp has a Sanford mailing address, but the parcel is not in Lee County. The U.S. Census Bureau geocoder places 630 Taylors Chapel Rd in Chatham County, in Oakland township (Census Bureau geocoder). If you are counting by mailing address, Lee County has two hemp businesses. If you are counting by county line, it has one, and Chatham has two.

The Closed Storefront on South Horner Boulevard

Until this year, Sanford had two hemp retailers on paper. The second was a Your CBD Store franchise at 2821 S Horner Blvd, in the commercial strip near the US-1 corridor, carrying SUNMED-brand CBD oils, tinctures, topicals, and edibles.

When we re-verified the roster for this guide on September 21, 2026, Google's business listing for that location was marked permanently closed, and the listing itself is unclaimed, meaning no one is maintaining it. The address is a multi-tenant plaza that houses other businesses, so the storefront did not vanish, only the hemp retailer in it.

We have removed the listing rather than leaving it up, because a directory entry that sends someone on a 40-minute drive to a closed door is worse than no entry at all. If you had that shop bookmarked for CBD specifically, the nearest comparable options are Oak City Hemp in Pittsboro for CBD alongside flower, Rocky River Hemp for farm-direct CBD by mail or pickup, or the wider Triangle selection covered in our CBD oil guide.

Pittsboro: Oak City Hemp on Lorax Lane

Pittsboro is small. The state's certified estimate put it at 5,996 residents on July 1, 2024, up from 4,550 at the 2020 census. It is also the county seat of a county nine times its size, and it sits at the junction of US-64 and US-15/501, which makes it the natural stop for Chatham County traffic heading toward Chapel Hill or Raleigh.

Oak City Hemp at 193-A Lorax Ln is the only dedicated hemp dispensary in Chatham County with a conventional retail schedule. It holds a 4.9 Google rating on 49 reviews, the highest rating of the three businesses in this guide, and carries THCa flower, concentrates, edibles, and CBD, with lab documentation available across the menu. It is part of the same operation as the Oak City Hemp store in Durham.

Its hours have widened since we last checked. The listing now shows 11am to 7pm every day including Sunday, an eight-hour daily window and 56 hours a week, where our directory previously recorded a six-hour noon to 6pm schedule. We have updated the listing. If you are driving in from outside the county, the practical read is that you now have an extra hour on each end of the day, but the shop still closes three hours earlier than Hempie's in Sanford.

Lorax Lane is off US-15/501 just north of the Pittsboro roundabout, in a small commercial cluster rather than on the courthouse circle itself. That puts it a couple of minutes off the main route through town, which is worth knowing if you are timing a stop on a Chapel Hill run. One thing the review count is worth reading carefully. Forty-nine reviews at 4.9 is a strong signal for a shop this size, but it is a small sample by Triangle standards, where a busy Raleigh store can carry a thousand. In a one-shop county, a high rating tells you the regulars are happy. It does not tell you the selection is deep, because there is nothing local to compare it against.

All Three Options Side by Side

Three businesses serve these two counties, and they are not variations on the same thing. One is a late-night walk-in storefront, one is a daytime walk-in storefront, and one is a farm selling its own products with limited pickup windows. Product ranges overlap more than the business models do, so the model column is the one that should drive your choice here.

The short version: go to Hempie's if you want THCa flower, vapes, or late hours, go to Oak City Hemp if you want flower or concentrates with lab paperwork in a shop you can browse, and order from Rocky River Hemp if you want locally made CBD edibles and topicals and do not need to walk in. Ratings are not a tiebreaker at these sample sizes; 39 reviews and 112 reviews are not measuring the same thing.

One gap in the table is worth naming rather than glossing over. Vapes are listed for Hempie's and not for Oak City Hemp, which reflects what each shop's product records show rather than a guarantee about what is behind the counter on a given day. Independent shops rotate categories in and out, and a single-store market rotates harder than a chain does because one slow month on a shelf is a bigger share of the floor. Treat every row here as a starting point for a phone call, not a stock list.

Both Counties Are Growing Faster Than the State, and the Shops Did Not Follow

Neither Lee nor Chatham is a shrinking rural county that retail reasonably skipped. Both grew faster than North Carolina as a whole between July 2020 and July 2024, and Chatham grew nearly as fast as Wake.

Chatham added 6,638 residents over those four years, going from 76,337 to 82,975. Lee added 5,161, from 63,474 to 68,635. The state grew 5.7% over the same stretch, so both counties beat the statewide pace, and both did it while their hemp retail count stayed flat or fell.

What makes Chatham unusual is how much more growth is already approved. The Town of Pittsboro's Chatham Park planned development district covers approximately 7,100 acres and is entitled for up to 22,000 residential units and up to 22 million square feet of non-residential development (Town of Pittsboro). Pittsboro has 5,996 residents today. The approved unit count alone is several times the town's entire current population, spread across a build-out measured in decades rather than years.

The county's industrial story is more mixed than the headlines suggest, and it is worth being precise about it rather than treating every announcement as a done deal. Wolfspeed's silicon carbide campus on the Chatham-Siler City Advanced Manufacturing site was announced as a $5 billion investment with 1,800 jobs on 450 acres (Chatham County Economic Development Corporation). The VinFast car plant in the same county has not been built. North Carolina sued the company on May 21, 2026 to acquire the property back, stating that VinFast had agreed to 7,500 jobs and $3 billion in investment on a site the General Assembly put $450 million into preparing, and that the company projects operations in 2028 rather than the July 2026 deadline in its agreement (NC Department of Justice). One of these projects is a reason to expect more customers in Chatham County. The other is a reason not to plan around them yet.

For a hemp shopper the takeaway is simpler than the economics. Two counties on a clear growth curve are being served by two stores, and neither store is positioned to absorb a large jump in demand. If you live here, the practical planning horizon is the next year, not the next decade.

There is a second reason the retail count may stay flat regardless of population. The federal hemp definition is scheduled to change in December, and nobody opens a storefront into a category whose legal footing is being rewritten in three months. Lee and Chatham counties are entering that window with one shop each, which means any new opening here is likelier to arrive after the rules settle than before.

Driving In: What the Trip Actually Buys You

Most people reading this are deciding between a local stop and a drive to a denser market. Here is the honest comparison, using approximate driving distance to the shop's own address rather than a promise about traffic. Your own trip will differ by a few miles depending on which side of town you start from.

Two routes do most of the work here. US-1 runs southwest out of Raleigh through Apex and Cary and lands in Sanford, which is why Hempie's draws from the Wake County commuter towns as well as Lee County. US-15/501 runs south out of Chapel Hill through Pittsboro, which is why Oak City Hemp sits on the Chatham side of a corridor that already carries Orange County traffic. Neither shop is remote. They are both on a main road, just a main road with a single hemp option on it.

The pattern is that nobody in Lee or Chatham County is far from a hemp shop, they are just far from a second one. That changes what a trip is for. In Raleigh you can shop three stores in an afternoon and compare. Delivery is the other lever. Several Triangle operators deliver into Lee and Chatham counties from outside them, which for a restock is usually more practical than an 80-mile round trip. Hours Are the Real Difference Between These Three

Once you know all three carry overlapping products, the schedule is what decides whether a given trip is possible at all. In a market with several shops, hours barely register, because if one is closed another is open. In a market with one shop per county, the posted schedule is the whole availability picture, and the spread here is wider than in any other county pair we have mapped.

Eighty-four hours against fifty-six is not a small difference when you work a standard day. Hempie's is open at 9pm on a Tuesday. Oak City Hemp is not, and Rocky River Hemp is closed most of the week. If your shopping window is evenings, Sanford is effectively the only option in either county, and that is true even for Pittsboro residents who live closer to the Chatham shop.

What neither county has is a specialist bench. Neither shop is recorded as carrying mushroom products, and the deeper concentrates and glass selections that a Raleigh or Cary shop can justify on volume are not something a single-store market supports. What NC Law Says, and What the Federal Deadline Changes

Everything sold in these shops is hemp-derived and legal in North Carolina today. Session Law 2022-32 defines hemp as cannabis "with a delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol concentration of not more than three-tenths of one percent (0.3%) on a dry weight basis" (NC General Assembly). Because that test looks only at delta-9, THCa flower passes it. No card, prescription, or diagnosis is involved, and you must be 21 or older with valid photo ID.

That framework has a scheduled federal end date, and the date has already moved once.

Update, September 12, 2026: The federal hemp deadline referenced below has shifted. H.R. 6500 became Public Law 119-103 on September 2, 2026, and its Section 2019 delays most of the new hemp definition, including the 0.4mg per container THC cap and the total-THC test that counts THCa, to December 11, 2026. A narrow piece covering cannabinoids the plant cannot naturally produce still begins November 12, 2026. Track it in our NC hemp bill tracker.

At the state level, House Bill 328 would move North Carolina to a similar total-THC standard and set an age-21 minimum in statute. The Senate adopted its conference report on July 2, 2026, and the bill was re-referred to the House Rules committee on July 30, 2026 with no floor vote since (NC General Assembly). Nothing on a Sanford or Pittsboro shelf has changed because of it.

For a two-shop market, the federal date lands harder than it does in Raleigh. Both storefronts here carry THCa flower and both treat it as an anchor category. A market with one shop per county has no room to absorb a product line disappearing, and no competitor down the street to pick up the slack. None of that makes today's purchase retroactively unlawful or turns a lawfully operating shop into an unlawful one. What changes is what these shops are allowed to restock after the date arrives. Buy what you actually use, keep the batch number or lab report for anything you buy, and check the bill tracker rather than a rumor before assuming a date has moved again.

The Bottom Line

Lee and Chatham counties have real hemp retail. What they do not have is a second option, which changes how you should plan the trip.

December 11, 2026 is the federal date that would end the current generation of intoxicating hemp products for most categories, after a signed delay moved most of the rewrite back from November 12.
